MÉTÉORITES, THE TALE OF A LEGENDARY MYTH
Certain products are destined to become a cult success. This has been the case for the legendary Météorites, from the very moment they were created in the Maison Guerlain’s workshop. For the first time ever in 1987, loose powder was fashioned in the form of perfectly round and extraordinarily soft multi-coloured pearls with an inimitable violet fragrance. Finally, there was a face powder that didn’t fly away! Thanks to the brush, all of the different shades are mixed into one single colour harmony, creating a genuine veil of perfection for women’s faces.
COLOUR FOR ABSOLUTELY PURE RADIANCE
When white light passes through a prism, it separates into a spectrum of different colours. Inversely, all of these colours together recreate ideal light, which is used in photography and film to erase imperfections and soften features. An expert in colours, Guerlain decided to use this technology to add dazzling radiance with unrivalled purity to women’s faces. A constellation made up of multi- coloured lights, Météorites envelop the skin in absolute radiance.
After having observed that complementary colours cancel each other out, producing a neutral hue, Guerlain discovered the secret to an ideal complexion: shades of pink to add freshness, green to diminish redness, white for a brighter complexion, mauve to reflect light, gold and pearl to add luminosity and a perfect touch of radiance... Météorites offer all of these colours in a single powder! Thanks to their mattifying, light-enhancing and customised corrective action, these multi-coloured pearls have revolutionised the world of powders by offering women a new way to use make-up.
The story of Guerlain and powders is a long and beautiful true love story that began in the 19th century with the creation of loose powders called “Ladies in all climates”, “Touche aux fleurs”, “Pulvis Alba”, “Poudre Superdulci”, “Poudre aux ballons” and “Poudre c’est Moi”. They then became “Voilettes”; at that time, powders were solely in the form of loose powder. The early 20th century would see the creation of compact powders, which were easier to use and above all carry. In the twenties, the so-called pocket compact was a must-have feminine accessory.
In 1986, Guerlain discovered a curious talc in the form of white beads of even diameter. Not exactly sure of what could be done with these sweet-like pearls, the idea nonetheless took shape relatively quickly... Why not create a pressed loose powder? A total paradox!
Each pearl has a quite specific role. Pink for a healthy glow, green to camouflage redness, white to illuminate, gold for an iridescent effect...
They had to act very quickly to prevent the idea from gaining ground outside of Guerlain. The engineers from the Chartres cosmetics plant buckled down to the task of creating a machine, as none existed on the market. They drew the idea from observing what was happening in pharmaceutical factories and designed a machine inspired by a tablet-manufacturing machine that was round with a slow and even rotating movement. Talc, colorants and water were blended together. But the machine had its limits and human intervention proved essential in obtaining evenly sized beads, which could not be either too big or too small. After sometimes-difficult trial runs, the result was achieved: the beads had an even shape.
The launch took place in 1987. The Météorites were imitated and copied by big and small brands alike. They sparked a minor revolution in the realm of powder, transforming and facilitating the application technique.
The boxes are still filled by hand; each measure of colour is carefully weighed and poured into its box.
